galaxy20 Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 I have a problem with my 96 P reg 2.0 glx galaxy it will fire up but the fuel pump is moaning, after doing some searches i found the infamous "relay 30" topic, i tried to get a replacement with ford today but they got the wrong one in and are having troubles finding it on their system, so i took out the relay and re-solder all the joints the engine is still cutting out and the fuel pump is still moaning. symptoms 1. fuel pump is moaning.2. on idle if i rev the engine it will dip down well below idle speed and sometimes completely cut out. i took the top of the relay and plugged it back in, i can physically see the relay switching on when the ignition comes on so my question is, do you think this is the relay 30 problem or should i try changing the fuel pump itself, or could there be any other reason why the revs drop and engine cuts out when revving from an idle speed? seatkid Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 (edited) Relay 30 problem stops the fuel pump working at all so it doesnt sound like that. More likely to be Idle control valve - see FAQ Nr. 59 If this "moaning" is abnormal (normally a whirr/sizzle, only audible with engine stopped) then it might be a faulty pump, blocked pickup, or blocked fuel filter. In each case I would think you would experience engine power problems e.g. at motorway speeds. Are you sure the moaning is from the pump (its located in the fuel tank) - its more likely just to be a vacuum or intake noise again possibly associated with the ICV Edited September 4, 2008 by seatkid Quote
galaxy20 Posted September 4, 2008 Author Report Posted September 4, 2008 thanks for your quick reply "seatkid" the reason i thought it may be the relay 30 is that i read a post saying that if the relay isn't switching properly then the fuel pump doesn't prime properly causing the fuel pump to wine and have intermittent cutting out problems. with the ignition switch on and the engine off then the pump doesn't make any noise at all, maybe just for a second or so when you first turn the ignition on, however with the engine running there is a wining noise coming from the fuel tank area, when you rev the car and the revs drop below idle speed the noise also dips to a lower/deeper toned wine then picks up again when the revs come back to normal idle speed, but if you rev it a couple of times the revs will drop right down and the engine stalls. do you still think i would be better off looking at the idle stability valve? galaxy20 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Report Posted September 5, 2008 I took off the idle stability valve and gave it a clean and refitted it, it made no difference at all to the car stalling, still having the same problems. Something i have noticed today was the temperate gauge is only working intermittently, would a faulty coolant temperature sensor have anything to do with the engine idle speed? Quote
galaxy20 Posted September 9, 2008 Author Report Posted September 9, 2008 Thanks seatkid, it was the ISV i swapped it out today and engine is idling perfectly now, i owe you a beer mate  Quote
